Are You One of the "Crazy Ones," Too?
A letter to the heart-centered seekers who feel it all.
Yesterday I taught a wellness class to a group of electrical linemen. (Not my ideal client, but still I love the chance to spread healing and light when I can.) As I was explaining how energy can sometimes get stuck in the body and create chronic stress or dis-ease, one of the men made a comment about playing video games. He said it was his version of releasing his big emotions and processing life. I asked him if he was fully conscious when he played video games or if he felt like he was in another land. He swore to me he was conscious, though I’m not convinced he knew what he was saying.
I can spout off statistics all day long that say how social media, video games and screens at large affect our nervous system, our brain chemistry and our overall health. I know the facts and teach them often, yet it still can feel like swimming upstream against the main culture.
Do you ever wonder what we’re doing this for?
As someone who was called to share love and light, do you ever, even for a moment think that you may be the crazy one and everyone else has it so much easier just going with the flow?
I know I’m not.
But there are moments when I wonder why I care so much about all these lifestyle habits that ensure optimal living.
Why does it matter?
Why wellness?
I woke up a few days later wondering this, and I wrote in my journal about what I thought true wellness was.
Then I started a conversation with my buddy ChatGPT. I asked: “What is true wellness?”
The response:
“True wellness isn’t just the absence of illness — it’s the presence of harmony in every layer of your being. It’s a state where body, mind, and spirit are in alignment, allowing you to feel both grounded and expansive.”
It then went on to give five buckets of wellness:
Physical
Mental
Emotional
Spiritual
Collective + Environmental
At times we wonder why we are so called. We wonder what this insane sense of purpose is, beating through us and guiding our life, almost with or without our permission.
That sense of knowing that you have to do what you’re here to do.
That sense of duty and responsibility to share the light with those who are open to it.
That sense of purpose and choosing to follow it is one step on the path of living well.
I believe in true wellness because I believe every human on the planet deserves to live their life to the fullest - in the highest integrity with their soul’s desires and inner knowings. In order to do that we must take time to check in with ourselves. To be present with our stillness, our inner wisdom and our connection to Source and the unknown realms.
The list of modalities for accomplishing that is endless.
Yoga
Meditation
Intuitive art (I have a whole community experience around this one)
Breathwork / Pranayama
Chanting
Visualization
Gratitude Practice
I think one of the biggest pieces our collective society has missed is allowing safe spaces for emotional processing and expression. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and it seems to be the most confusing for people. Our culture is afraid of deep emotions. We’re taught from a young age to “stop crying”, “toughen up” and “calm down.” Effectively we are taught to ignore, hide and shame our emotions.
As a kid…well hell, even as an adult, I get very excited and hyperactive. My whole life I’ve been told to tame it down, don’t be so loud and chill out. Now oftentimes instead of letting my pure joy and excitement out, I notice I turn down the dial when I’m in public. Dimming my true expression.
Of course, we don’t always need to express our emotions in a public place. More often than not it is best to express big emotions in private, or with a trusted friend. The full color palette of emotions is rich with variety, though we usually tend to stick with just a few main colors. What would it look like for you to explore the full range of your expression?
Rage
Grief
Bliss
Horror
Heartbreak
Longing
Alexandra Roxo wrote a fantastic book on this. Dare to Feel. She includes stories, poems and rituals to help you get to know big feelings. I highly recommend it.
Our emotions are meant to move through us. They are E-motions. Energy in motion. When we can keep the energy of our emotions flowing through us we keep our bodies in wellness.
I liken it to a waterhose. When we stuff our emotions down or refuse to process or feel them, we create a kink in our energetic and physical bodies. Just like a water hose with a kink, the energy stops flowing. Over time we feel off, then stuck, then depressed. “What happened?” we wonder. Our bodies begin to get stiff and sick and we wonder why. All the while we simply need to feel and release our big emotions in order to unkink the hose and let the energy flow freely again.
It’s worth saying too that our emotional wellness directly affects our physical and mental wellness. When you’re carrying a big emotion around, don’t you usually feel it in your body and mind too? You may become distracted, frustrated, sad, or even disassociated. You may have digestive issues, or not feel like eating, or feel like over eating. Sometimes we get headaches from not feeling our emotions. The list goes on and on.
I wrote a premium article about a pain I was having in my low belly and how a rage ritual allowed me to release the pain fully and feel better overnight. You can read my story of becoming friends with anger and find some rage journaling prompts for yourself too. I also have a blog post about my rage art ritual you can see here: https://www.thesparklinghippie.com/blog/the-color-of-anger-my-rage-art-ritual-story
What about you? What do you think is the hardest part of maintaining a wellness journey? Is it the mental, physical or emotional piece? Which do you find yourself wanting more support with?
