Are We Forgetting How to Be Human?
On Finding Authentic Connection in a Disconnected World
Do you feel like our world is getting faster and busier? Do you feel like people are connecting less yet posting more?
Sometimes I feel like everyone has realized the game of public relations, the public image — and so all of your friends and neighbors are seeming more and more fabulous online, but somehow they seem more distant in person. I can name several people in my life who asked for help publicly online but then ignored a personal text sent with love.
I even catch myself sometimes choosing scrolling over answering a phone call from a friend. I admit there are times when I wanna brain rot rather than have a big conversation. And yet, we’re here to deeply connect with others.
The Search for Deeper Connection
Lately, I’ve been feeling a bit like an alien on this planet. I wonder if I’m the only one who uses silent mode for self-care or chooses paperbacks over Tiktoks.
This feeling is why I built The Sparkling Hippie. It's a space to foster a deep-hearted community amongst people who value wholeness, authenticity, and a journey of personal growth. Gathering together isn’t about being perfect or polished. It’s about being present.
Finding Presence Through Practice, Not Perfection
In yoga, we use the word practice. Because no one is perfect. We are all simply engaging in a practice that allows us to connect more deeply to ourselves and to spirit. Our practice allows us to release tension as we tune into the breath and come into the present moment.
The same can be said for intuitive art. It isn’t about making something beautiful. It’s about practicing being present with big emotions and letting them move through you. This is the exact work we do in my 1-on-1 intuitive sessions—creating a sacred space for creative souls and spiritual seekers to connect back to themselves and find journaling for clarity when the outside world feels disconnected.
Journaling Prompts for Self-Discovery
This journey back to ourselves begins with honest self-reflection. If you're looking for a place to start, consider these
📝journal prompts for self-discovery:
Are you showing up to be perfect or to be present?
Do you present the polished version online or the full truth?
In person, are you being fully present and authentic in your imperfect self, or are you hiding?
In your downtime, do you automatically pick up your phone? Or do you take time to pause and choose something different?
A Simple Tip for Intentional Living
If you struggle with the automatic phone habit, here is a tip for more intentional living.
I create a small sticky note of things that make me happy. Often these are simple things like “read a book,” “paint for fun,” or “go for a walk.” This simple list helps me choose an activity that fills my cup over vegging out. That option is always there, but if I keep other options handy, I am much more likely to choose one first. Many times I’m so fulfilled afterward that I don't even want to use a screen.
This is a small step, but these tiny choices are the foundation of a happy life. If you want to take this practice further, a dedicated
journal for self-discovery or even a simple gratitude journal can be a powerful tool to track your progress and continue finding your purpose.
What small choice can you make today to choose more joy?
