What to do When it Feels Like All Your Business Ideas are Random...
You aren’t as random as you think.
Lately I’ve had a lot of “full circle moments.” You know, those brief but beautiful moments in between the waves of life when you have a chance to catch your breath, stop, look around and realize you are exactly where you need to be.
In the midst of a journey we often feel lost, confused or even frustrated that things don’t seem to be unfolding in a straight, logical order. We feel we are falling behind or not “getting there” fast enough. Roadblocks, delays, detours all breed frustration to our quick-paced, instant-gratification themed world. In my experience, however, many of these so-called “roadblocks” are not so much that, as they are perfect stepping stones, guiding us exactly where we are meant to be, at exactly the right pace.
Our best bet always, is to enjoy the journey as it unfolds.
I hear lots of new coaches and entrepreneurs express that they feel they are “all over the place”, or that their ideas and interests are so random, scattered and multi-passionate that the very thought of niching down brings them to tears of frustration.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned by observing my own journey while also helping others, it’s that your journey, your desires, your dreams, your passions -- they aren’t as random as you think. In fact, they are all beautiful woven together inside of your heart so that you can easily and effortlessly create your unique niche. The problem isn’t logically defining this niche so much as it is allowing all of the parts of ourselves to unfold in due time. You can’t force a flower to bloom, but you can enjoy the day to day beauty of its progress.
One of my favorite ways to serve new coaches and online entrepreneurs is to create a BusinessMap for them. When they arrive for our 1-hour session they are scattered with ideas, running around like a mad scientist, trying to throw spaghetti against the wall in an attempt to make a niche or idea “stick.” They are overwhelmed, frustrated and exhausted by the time they get to me.
After a calm, opening prayer and grounding session -- I ask them to begin sharing their ideas with me. As they speak, I intuitively weed through the “shoulds” motivated by guilt, force and a desire to please others. I tune-in to the ideas that cause them to spark excitement, speak more quickly and talk more animatedly. From my perspective, these are dead giveaways.
You’re further along than you think.
The thing is -- you are much farther along than you realize. You are also soooo much more clear than you realize. Your soul already knows the way -- it’s your head that makes you feel confused. The trick is to separate the parts of your mind that are afraid of growth and change and failure, from the pieces of your heart and soul that are calmly and steadily leading you toward your truth.
So, what can you DO to feel more clear NOW?
Start by making a list of all the things that most interest you right now. Include hobbies, passions, random things you are WAY too geeky about..anything that lights you up.
Add to that list things that have fascinated you for long periods of time, throughout the journey of your life. (It’s okay if you were on and off with these things.)
Look at your list and see if you can make any connections. Highlight the common “themes” and even share this with a close and trusted friend if you feel open to an outsider’s perspective.
This should help you get started with seeing the themes and unique niche for which you were born to serve. Your unique passions, interests and desires are so perfectly placed inside you. There are people on this planet you were born to serve. There is a need for your exact qualities in the world. Stepping into your purpose isn’t a luxury. It’s not just about finding more fulfillment in your own life. It’s about giving yourself over to love, so that you can serve the greater good. You are here to change the hearts and lives of thousands, if not millions. Release your need for control and allow yourself to relax into this journey -- trusting that things are as they should be while also keeping laser focus on the big vision that was divinely placed in your heart. Sooner or later, these seemingly random pit stops will all make perfect sense.
