3 Secrets to Getting What You Want Out of Life

Lately I've been doing a lot of study on the law of attraction, divine purpose and positive thinking. Through several podcasts, documentaries and blog posts, I've noticed they all have one idea in common: whatever it is that you need or desire, you already have inside of you now.

How many times a day do you catch yourself saying, “If only I had this...” or “I just need to....and then I'll be happy” or sometimes we say “One day I will...” The problem with this kind of thinking is that we willfully take our situation out of our own hands. We are passively deciding to let life happen to us instead of carefully crafting the life we want to have.

Wether it's more money, more happiness, a relationship or a dog, it doesn't matter. Whatever we want, be it tangible, psychological or emotional, we have the power within ourselves, right now, to make that thing happen.

So what's the secret?

Listen closely...

The secret, to getting what you want out of life, is no more complicated than acting upon those desires.

If you want more money, you need to carve out time to get another job. There are always excuses for not having time, but the problem is not time, the problem comes down to a matter of priorities. Maybe you need to spend less time with your friends and more time on the job so you can achieve the financial goals you wish to achieve for yourself.

Perhaps you want more happiness. We often blame our careers, our location and our living situations as reasons for not having enough happiness. Here again, the change starts with small steps YOU have the power to make, towards that ultimate goal. Maybe basketball makes you happy. Commit to playing basketball twice a week after work or school. Again, the problem isn't time or money, the problem lies within your priorities and your desire to change the order of your priorities around the thing that you desire most. The power to align towards your ultimate goal is in your hands at this very moment. The choices that make up our lives are in our care. We have freewill. We have the power of choice. YOU choose how you spend the limited amount of days you have on this earth. You choose where you want to live, how you want to spend your money and what you spend your time doing.

Just to drive my point in a little further (and to stay true to the title of this post) I'm going to give you three super short secrets about how you can get what you want out of life.

  1. You are in control of you. If something in your life isn't making you happy, use your power of choice to change it. You are in control of yourself. There is nothing else on this earth that can control you without your consent. Life is made of choices and we are the choosers. This rule makes no difference to what color, gender or age you are. Each of us are in control of ourselves.

  2. You are not in control of anyone else. We can't control our boss, our family members, our friends or our roommates. We can't control the president, nor can we control the crazy things happening around us. It is best to rememember that these things are outside of our control. When we dwell on things we can't change, all we do is stress ourselves out generate more unhappiness – this is the opposite of the goal we want to achieve.

  3. You have the same 24 hours a day as everyone else. I know this may be shocking for you, but you have the same 24 hours in a day that Mark Zuckerberg does. You have the same amount of hours each day as Beyonce. All the great leaders and successful people in our society have 24 hours in each day. Sure, you can make excuses about the fact that they are rich and that their jobs “aren't real” like yours, but remember they didn't start out that way. Mark and Queen Bee are normal people just like you and I. They started out in public kindergarden just like you did. The difference is that they both had a dream that they worked hard for. They both continue to work tirelessly towards their goals and once those goals are met, they chase towards more. How could you rearrange your schedule to better utilize your 24 hours?

I want to end this post by asking you one question. How bad do you want it?

If choice and priorites are all that stand in the way of you achieving you, then what's stopping you? Each day we make excuse after excuse of why we can't do this and why we can't do that. We are busy, we are tired, we are overworked and we are exhausted, but you know what the reality is? We are lazy.

There's nothing in this world you can't achieve with a little effort and some time. Would you like to play guitar? Take a lesson. Would you like to be in a relationship? Put yourself out there. Do you want to live somewhere exciting? Make a move. Maybe you don't have money for these things. Spend less on coffee and clothes.

Everything comes down to priorities and effort. Complaining never got anyone anywhere. So let me ask you again – How bad do you want it?

Start after your dreams now. Tomorrow you'll be glad you did.
