The Discipline of Devotion: Why Reinventing the Wheel is Stalling Your Success
How a Tiny Yoga Community Taught Me the Power of Staying the Course
There was a moment in Tuesday night yoga class last week that I happened to capture on camera. It’s one of those moments that says everything. I’ll show you the picture in a minute, but first, the story behind it.
One of the students pointed out that they have been consistently doing yoga with me for two solid years. I don’t know how it's been two years, but it’s true. I led my first yoga class in Frederick in September of 2023 on the concrete floor of the big red barn at the Pioneer Townsite. Talk about a hallmark movie setting!
I remember those first few classes. No one had done yoga before. I wasn’t sure people would even be interested. Yet we had upwards of 20 folks for the first couple of classes! For months people would come try it out for a few weeks, then fall off. Throughout the two years I’ve had 5-7 very consistent students, four of which never ever miss a class. I call them “The Core Four.”
When they first started, I’m almost sure none of them could touch their toes. They’d never taken a class before. They were simply curious and open-minded.
Their curiosity turned into discipline, which turned into devotion and dedication. They don’t like missing a single class because they know it throws off their energetic alignment and the beautiful rhythm they’ve built. That first year we worked on all the basics. I’m really intentional about preventing injuries, and that comes with learning small things like how to grip the mat, making sure your shoulders are in alignment, and always keeping that navel-to-spine connection to protect the low back!
After a year of that, it seems like these students have taken off. They are doing advanced poses that took me years to master. At some point, their practice will be further along than mine. These four really, truly inspire me. They challenge my own devotion and dedication—not just to yoga but to anything I’m doing. This exact same principle is what creates deep grooves of repeatable success in business.
What Actually Creates Success in Business?
In the world of small business, I see a lot of success and a lot of stagnancy. Over my 7 years of watching, I’ve learned one undeniable truth: It’s the devoted, dedicated, disciplined people that get ahead. The secret isn't a new funnel; it’s devotion.
Successful entrepreneurs share a few surprisingly simple habits:
They don’t constantly teach wildly new or innovative ideas.
They don’t change their brand every single week.
They don’t necessarily rely on the coolest, cutting-edge website.
They simply show up, day in and day out.
They repeat their core message again and again.
They sell their same offer, again and again.
When no one buys, they make small tweaks and launch again.
My problem in the past has been using my creative juices to reinvent the wheel every 2-3 months, trying to be the most innovative. I would try to change my market or my offer to meet the latest flow of energy coming my way.
The problem with this constant pivoting is that it leaves your brand feeling washed up. No one knows what you stand for, and no one has a clear understanding of what to buy from you.
✨The Sparkling Takeaway: Consistency isn't a cage; it’s the foundation that allows your intuition to actually take flight without the overwhelm.
You don’t get to the full lotus position from casually practicing yoga once or twice a month. It’s the dedication and consistency that truly build muscle resilience, hydrate the fascia, and release chronic stiffness. The same is absolutely true for how you run your business and how you market your offer—ESPECIALLY in the first couple of years.
How Consistency in Marketing Creates Success
When it comes to marketing a business, you may be tempted to hop on new trending apps, quickly slipping into the never-ending rabbit hole of learning content creation and video editing techniques. While these things can be helpful and potentially a good strategy, it’s important to keep in mind your main marketing goal and your clear best-fit customer avatar.
Make sure your goals align with your customer base and that your marketing platform helps you connect with them authentically. For example:
Soul-driven entrepreneurs crave more than just profits; they want their businesses to align with their soul's purpose and make a positive impact.
Intuitive innovators trust their inner guidance and aren't afraid to break the mold.
Heart-centered leaders value authenticity and integrity in their business practices.
Mindset masters understand the power of a positive mindset and are committed to cultivating one.
Everyone’s best-fit customer isn’t on Instagram. Not everyone can market their business the exact same way. You have to think about your audience first and foremost. They may not be best reached on social media at all! Some of my best clients came from hanging out in local coffee shops.
Don’t just blindly follow random online marketing advice. Use the help of a trusted business coach who knows your business, your goals, and your personality. It can also be deeply helpful to consider the WHY behind your marketing. I walk you through a personal journaling journey on the energetics behind social media marketing in my journal: The Social Media Energetics Journal.
It’s imperative that you are conscious and cognizant of your marketing and media habits, and that you have a clear understanding as to why and how you use each platform, if at all.
Other times, the best path forward is to simply pick a platform you enjoy and show up regularly. At first, it’s weird. It’s awkward. Selling things online IS weird until it's not. Just like everything else, confidence comes with consistent action. Instead of making marketing a never-ending chore, try to see it as a practice, a devotion, or a ministry. That’s what will keep you in the rhythm. Make it your daily ritual for connecting with your community. Let your heart guide you, not the ever-changing algorithms.
