Myth: Posting on Instagram Means You are Marketing Your Business

Recently, I did something that felt counterintuitive to most business coaches: I turned away my first client who wanted help mastering Instagram as her primary marketing method. We had already established a beautiful coaching relationship, and we will absolutely continue working together to launch her legally sound, root-chakra safe business—clarifying her pricing, defining her ICA (Ideal Customer Avatar), and building a repeatable system that honors her energy. But when she said she wanted her main focus to be creating reels, posts, graphics, and stories to build a following, I knew I had to draw a line.

In hindsight, I realize this was a significant boundary moment for me, but in the heat of the conversation, it was simply a hard sacral “no.” Not one bone in my body lit up as she described her vision for her Instagram grid. I’ve learned that as a Heart-Centered Leader, ignoring that inner nudge only leads to burnout for both the coach and the client. I chose to be polite but radically honest: I cannot in good conscience lead someone down a path that I know, statistically and energetically, is a siphon for their creative spirit.

Why the "Insta-Strategy" is an Illusion for Soul-Driven Business

I told her I had studied Instagram professionally since its inception. I truly believe I have used best practices for a decade. I’ve taught best practices to my clients and yet I can honestly say out of the hundreds I’ve worked with, only two have had actual clients and income come primarily through Instagram.

One of those two told me her Instagram success was truly a random blessing from the algorithm. She could not tell me what she did to receive thousands of followers overnight (this was in the earlier years of the platform, of course). The other is a client who’s worked super hard at instagram for about 5 years as she’s grown her business. She posts daily and has in tandem worked hard offline to build credibility and publicity for her brand - winning local awards annually, networking within her niche and continuing education with major brands in her industry. I think she’s killing it on Instagram and it is a main source of where her clients find her. But I’m going to be very honest with you, she has less than 2k followers. I share that not to spread shame but to spread more AWARENESS on what it looks like to build a successful business - on or off the Gram.

For everyone else—the service providers, the coaches, the Soul-Driven Entrepreneurs—Instagram has functioned as a secondary networking tool at best, and a massive time-suck at worst. We have to stop treating the algorithm like a deity that will provide for us if we just sacrifice enough of our time and peace to it. Relying on a platform you don’t own is like building your sanctuary on rented land that could be reclaimed by the landlord at any moment.

And what about Joy?

But more importantly, I don't find joy there.

Not as a consumer nor as a creator.

It’s exhausting. Feels shallow. And tbh it really feels like it’s turned into a bunch of businesses selling to each other and using ads to do so. I’m over it.

But if you want to pursue it, by all means, I think you should, but ONLY if it brings you joy, sparks your creativity and leaves you feeling inspired and uplifted - as both a creator and a consumer.

Otherwise, you should look into other platforms.

Marketing isn’t One Size Fits All

Personally, the older I get the more I am really designing my business around slow marketing, repeatable systems and predictable routines. I don't have extra energy to waste on coming up with fresh content every 48 hours that will expire in the same amount of time it took to create it.

Marketing - or sharing as I often call it - is not a one-size-fits-all generic t-shirt. What worked for one business, worked for one business. You cannot keep letting these social media gurus keep sidetracking you into thinking that their system to 6 figures is the one that’s finally going to do it for you. Please quit giving your power away.

All you actually need is to understand the basics of marketing. Know your people. Know your service. Communicate your service to your people and repeat it often. You also need to provide the value you promise, which makes marketing magnetic and effortless as clients refer you to others on their own. That’s the ultimate goal.

Moving from Content Creation to Magnetic Marketing

We need to clarify something, my love: Instagram is a platform, not a plan. When you spend two hours agonizing over a reel transition or hunting for the perfect trending audio, you aren’t necessarily marketing—you’re content creating. Marketing is the strategic bridge that connects your soul-driven service to the person who needs it most. If you are posting without a repeatable system, you are essentially throwing glitter into a windstorm and hoping some of it sticks to a customer.

For the Heart-Centered Entrepreneurs and Mindful Manifestors in our tribe, marketing shouldn’t feel like a chore that drains your sacral energy. It should be:

  • Repeatable: You shouldn't have to reinvent the wheel every 48 hours before your content expires.

  • Predictable: You should know exactly where your next client is coming from, whether you posted a story today or not.

  • Sustainable: It should honor your "slow marketing" season, especially when you’re already booked solid with the work you love.

Gurus Aren’t Your Guru

I also hear growth-minded clients tell me how guilty they feel because they are booked solid but haven't been able to post on Instagram thrice a day  because they are so busy.

Girl, drop the guilt.

If your clients aren't even coming from Instagram, why are you letting a "guru" dictate your worth based on your engagement rate? Even if they are coming from the gram, the ultimate goal isn't a viral video; it’s a business so aligned and high-value that your happy clients become your marketing team through referrals. That is the "golden mountain top".
