You are a badass.

I can count on one hand how many times someone has said that sentence to me. I can tell you specifically when those times were because I remember how great it felt to hear it. But honestly, it's been a very long time since I've been told that. After reading Jen Sincero's book, I realized I don't need someone else to remind me of my badassery, because I must embrace it and train my mind to live a life that exudes that confidence and positivity. This is exactly what “You are a Badass” is all about.

Though there are literally DOZENS of amazing snippets and stories underlined in my copy, I'm going to do you a favor and limit this blog post to the top five take-aways I received from this book.

The full title of the book is: You are a Badass: How to stop doubting your greatness and start living an awesome life. Jen Sincero, the author, is a very successful speaker and life coach as well as a #1 New York Times bestselling author of “You are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth.” (This is explains why the money chapter was SO amazing, and brings me to my first takeaway.)

My Top Takeaways from Jen Sincero’s Book: “You Are a Badass”

Money

Let me just say that the money chapter might have been my favorite – and that's a HUGE statement considering how great the rest of the book was! I've recently been into studying financial success and the mindset of mastering wealth, but “You are a Badass” took my mindset and understanding to a whole new level. I realized that subconsciously I have been blocking myself from a higher earning potential, simply because my mind wasn't open to it.

Sincero teaches the mindset behind attracting the money you'd like to have. Rather than just wishing and hoping you'll someday be a millionaire, it is better to write out something that says you already are a millionaire and your grateful for that income because you can spend it on family vacations, helping plant trees in Africa and donating to your church. The feeling behind being able to do the things you long to do is what will motivate you to go after the next level of earnings, plus it will open your mind and allow you to receive this when it comes to you.

Mindset

I'd say this is more of an underlying theme of the entire book than a specific bullet point made in a single chapter. I mean if the very title “You are a Badass” doesn't convey that message then I don't know what does. Sincero teaches each chapter with the approach of mastering your mindset on whatever topic you need help with. If you believe you are a fat, lonely, loser then you will continue to be a fat, lonely, loser because your mind says so. On the flip, if you believe you are an amazing, beautiful woman, you will be an amazing, beautiful woman, because you believe it! Perception is reality, folks.

Decision

There is a chapter in the book called “The Almighty Decision.” I will say, the lessons learned in this chapter has been motivating me for weeks after finishing the book. It's uncomfortable truth hit me hard. The fact is, you aren't going to do anything you say you will until you simply make up your mind to do it. The power lies in deciding you are going to do something. Once you've put your mind to it, there is nothing that can stop you, you simply have to decide to do it.

I've heard this lesson before taught many different ways, but never in the form that Jen Sincero teaches in “You are a Badass.” I love her quote, “So often, we pretend we've made a decision, when what we've really done is signed up to try until it gets too uncomfortable.” This fact is undeniable. I think we all struggle with making a true, conscious effort toward our goals.

Self-love

Another underlying theme throughout the entire book is self-love. While Jen is teaching the mindset of believing in yourself and going after your dreams, she's simultaneously teaching you how important it is to love yourself in everything that you do. When you don't believe in yourself, no one else does either. This is such an important truth we all must master.

Surrender

I found this point to be extremely contradictory and yet it made total sense. In chapter 25, Jen writes about the importance of surrendering everything to God/the universe and allowing yourself to trust that good things will happen. Often times we get so hyper-focused on achieving something that we want to control every detail of the outcome. It is this very controlling nature that will often scare away the things we truly want. Rather, the best thing to do at the end of the day after working your hardest and doing everything in your power to succeed, is to let go and trust that the universe will bless your efforts. It's the most terrifying part of any goal.

All of these things are thrown together and blended up in a bright yellow smoothie that goes down easy and provides useful fuel for months to come. “You are a Badass” is the fun and straight-forward self-help book that kicks you in the butt and makes you want to go after your own life already.
