Kelly Hill Caves is a great destination if you like to be amazed by nature. I've been on cave tours before but what makes this one unique is that it is such a young cave compared to others. Kelly Hill is really only about 2 million years old.
What to Expect:
The cave tour takes about an hour. Wear your comfy shoes and be prepared to walk! There is a couple hundred meters of incline walking before you get to the actual cave itself. Inside the cave you will walk down some very steep stairs before the place opens up on to level ground.
Depending on your tour guide you can learn quite a bit about the cave. My favorite fact was that some locals from Kingscote originally explored the cave with candlelight and string. If you think that sounds like fun you should keep reading.
Kelly Hills has two options: a guided cave tour or an adventure tour. The guided cave tour is pretty cool but if you have been on a cave tour before I would recommend spending the extra money for the adventure tour. The adventure tour is unique because it allows you to tour the cave like the locals did back in the 1920's...by candelight. If you think being in a cave is cool, try crawling around with only a candle to guide you. The cost is significantly higher but if you're in for a unique adventure it's worth the price.
The guided walking tour is $18 per adult. For the adventure tour the price increases to $70 per adult.
For a complete list of fees check the Kelly Hill website. Entering the park is free and that includes some hikes but the tours will cost you.
Located on the southwest portion of Kangaroo Island, Kelly Hill Caves is just east of Flinder's Chase and Hanson Bay. It's completely opposite of Kingscote so be prepared for a drive.
The visitor's center is open from 10:15-4:30pm daily. Contact Kelly Hills for more information the times of daily tours.
